Taste of Jaipur

What this tour is about: The character of cuisine in India is essentially regional. The size and diversity of the country has forced every area to develop a cuisine of its own.  In earlier eras, transportation was a problem, so each area had to come up with a style of food inspired by locally available materials. As a result, not only dishes, but flavours, colors, methods of cooking, and even the style of cutting vegetables change as often as the landscape does.

Rajasthan’s cuisine has evolved from its need to reduce the amount of water used for cooking. Given the harsh desert terrain, foods that delivered high nutritional value, which could be stored for long periods of time, and which used locally available ingredients were created. Rajasthani cooking is largely vegetarian, but each meal is not dominated by vegetables. Instead, milk, buttermilk and other milk products are used widely in the cuisine,  so are various pulses and millets.

Tour Details: In this tour, we will take you to a Rajasthani home for a demonstration and tasting of traditional home-style Indian cooking. A full meal will be demonstrated to you. You can choose to participate in the cooking, or merely watch and learn. Before visiting the home, you will take a walk through a local bazaar with our Food Guide, to learn about the ingredients and essentials of Rajasthani cooking. If you’re interested in popular street food, we can also take a look at the snacks and delicacies that Jaipur loves to eat!

Duration: 3-4 hours, usually starts at 11 a.m.

Cost: The costs are based on the number of people doing the tour. Please write to us for pricing.

What to wear: It is advisable to dress modestly for walking in the markets. Please ensure you have adequate sun protection. You have to take off your shoes when you enter an Indian home. Photography is not permitted in the bazaars this tour, since it is a sensitive issue. However, you are welcome to photograph the cooking session.
